Why are patients being assigned to the same study twice, and why does CTMS Push fail?
Last updated: August 18, 2026
Context
Some patients in the PRM may appear to have the same study assigned to them more than once (duplicate study assignments). When this occurs and a CTMS Push is attempted, the following error may appear:
"Push to CTMS failed. Patient study assignment must reference a valid study-site assignment."
Additionally, even if no error is shown during the push, the patient may not be correctly associated to their study in the CTMS after the push completes.
Answer
Duplicate study assignments on a patient record can cause CTMS Push to fail or result in the patient not being properly associated with the correct study in the CTMS. This is a known issue that requires correction by the support team.
If you encounter this situation, please follow these steps:
Identify the affected patient(s) who have the same study listed more than once on their record.
Note the study name(s) involved and take a screenshot of the duplicate assignments if possible.
Submit a bug report to the support team, including the patient name(s), the duplicated study name(s), and any error messages received during the CTMS Push attempt.
Do not attempt to manually update the Site assignment on the duplicate record, as this field may be locked and cannot be edited from the patient record directly.
The support team will investigate and resolve the duplicate study assignments on the backend, after which the CTMS Push should complete successfully and the patient will be correctly associated with their study in the CTMS.
